FAMUFEST #37 will bring audiovisual life back to Prague

FAMUFEST #37 will present the latest output from the film school talents, an exhibition and multiple accompanying events. Despite the pandemic situation, the film festival will make the U Stýblů Palace in Wenceslas Square buzz with life. It will be held from 28 April to 2 May 2021 and all films will also be accessible to viewers online.

FAMUFEST will introduce a total of 63 films in themed sections in both competition and non-competition categories of feature directing as well as animated, experimental, and documentary film. Viewers can look forward to Czech Lion Award-winning Anatomy of a Czech Afternoon directed by Adam Martinec, the ever-topical Frontier directed by Damián Vondrášek, the animated Love Is Just a Death Away directed by Bára Anna Stejskalová and nominated for the Magnesia Award for the best student film, and the documentary We Are Epicentres of the Earthquake by Tomáš Hlaváček that resonated at this year’s Jihlava IDFF. “We will also expose as yet undiscovered talents who will shape the future of Czech cinema, photography and other media,” festival director Agáta Kolářová describes the festival’s programming.

Despite the current situation, the FAMUFEST team has found a way to take the festival to the viewers – the heart of the event will reside at the U Stýblů Palace in Wenceslas Square. The festival crew will breathe life into an abandoned seven-storey building in Prague’s centre with a festival hub and a multimedia exhibit installed in the passage. “The building’s interiors will also host a large part of the festival events including the opening and closing ceremonies, music concerts and discussions with filmmakers,” says festival director Julie Ondračková. The festival’s official jingle will also be introduced in the U Stýblů Palace passage in early April.

Film viewers will be able to watch all films online at www.famufest.cz. A jury involving film experts from across the art scene will rate the competition films; their names will be published soon via the festival’s communication channels. The winning films will be announced during the final ceremony on 1 May 2021.

As has become a tradition, FAMUFEST is famed for its accompanying events: the extensive off programme offers concerts, lectures by (not only) film luminaries and, new for this year’s edition, a festival podcast. Through the festival theme – SPECTRUM – the team and the film authors intend to communicate to the viewers the broadest possible definition of audio-visual art and the perception of the world. Czech TV is the main media partner to FAMUFEST.
