FAMU hosted the fifth edition of the Central and Eastern European Game Studies Conference (CEEGS) focusing on research into computer games between 11 and 13 October. Almost 100 participants arrived from 19 countries across the globe – specifically Poland, Slovakia, Malta, Russia, the Netherlands, UK, Spain, Finland, Denmark, USA, Canada, Norway, Indonesia, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Romania, Estonia and Hungary.
Among the most prominent guests of the conference were game researcher Jesper Juul, Head of the Game and Media Design Department at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the author of Half-real, Casual Revolution and The Art of Failure, and game developer and researcher Clara Fernández-Vara who works at the New York University Game Center and wrote Introduction to Game Analysis. Other internationally recognised scholars who presented their papers as part of the conference included Dominic Arsenault from Université de Montreal, Jan-Noël Thon from the University of Nottingham and Hans-Joachim Backe from the IT University of Copenhagen. Participants at CEEGS also included prominent game developers such as Jan Kavan (CBE Software), Martin Klíma (Warhorse Studios), Jarek Kolář (Bohemia Interactive) and Georg Hobmeier (Causa Creations).
Considering the fact that this year’s edition of the conference was hosted by the Film and TV School, which intends to open a game design programme in the future, the topic of the event was Ludic Expressions and the goal was to explore the expressive options that the computer game medium offers. The conference papers covered many aspects of the topic, from the specific way of working with narration to meta-references to political concepts presented by computer games. In addition to the conference itself, CEEGS also organised three workshops focused on more specific topics: Slavic Fantasy in Games, War Gaming and Game Development Teaching.
The conference was organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University.
